Stop Sweating
No one enjoys sweating but how can you stop sweating? Perspiration or hyperhidrosis as the condition is known medically is more than a mere annoyance. People who suffer from excessive sweating may suffer embarrassment and the condition may impact negatively upon their social life. In fact there is a multi-million dollar antiperspirants industry that has developed just to combat underarm perspiration.
To understand how we sweat it is necessary to examine the glands that produce it. These can be either the apocrine or eccrine glands. The apocrine sweat glands are located in the areas of the groin, anus and nipples and the under arms. The sweat produced from the apocrine glands is normally limited and it's production is intermittent. Surprisingly apocrine sweat is completely sterile and odorless when first produced but develops its bad odor from bacterial decomposition.
Apocrine sweat glands serve no real purpose other than their ability to produce an unpleasant smell. Underarm sweating is also known as axillary sweating and is stimulated by emotion in addition to it's function as a body heat temperature controlling system.
The eccrine sweat glands cool the body through the evaporation of sweat which is mostly composed of water but has traces of salt, urea and potassium. Sweat is sterile and mostly odorless, but when certain spicy foods are eaten the sweat may take on their odor.
Heat is a frequent cause of exaggerated sweating just like in normal perspiration. That heat may be from sources outside the body, such as sunny weather or a warm room.Sweating in response to temperature occurs primarily on the trunk and face, where sweat evaporates most readily in cooling the body, but eating spicy foods can also have the same effect.
Emotion is generally regarded as the most frequent cause of hyperhidrosis. The reason that some people react so drenchingly to stressful situations and not other is still not known. Men and women suffer from both conditions, although women generally perspire less than men but less willing to tolerate it. In palmar hyperhidrosis, sweat can be so profuse that it will run off from the palms of the hands and fingers.
Excessive foot sweating can literally see the sufferer "stew" the soles in their own sweat, so it's important to get rid of as much moisture as possible. Additionally the bacterial decomposition of cellular debris caused by the scaling off of the outer layer of skin may generate a bad odor.
Wear shoes made only of leather or fabric, which allow your feet to breathe such as sandals. It is a good idea to wear a new pair of shoes every day so that they have a week to thoroughly dry before being worn again. Wear cotton socks and use powder to absorb moisture.
In underarm emotional hyperhidrosis, sweating can be so bad that a shirt and jacket become drenched with sweat within 15 mins. Strangely people with underarm hyperhidrosis rarely have underarm odor due to the profuse eccrine sweat washing away their apocrine sweat. Dermatologists may prescribe topical agents for problem cases such as a solution of aluminum chloride in absolute ethyl alcohol.
Hyperhidrosis surgery or surfical removal of the sweat glands from the armpits is often recommended in severe cases. This may involve removing the mass of underarm sweat gland tissue or removing the skin layer containing sweat glands from the entire underarm area. Other procedures include a sympathectomy where the nerves connecting the sweat glands to the nervous system are cut.
Some physicians treat hyperhidrotic patients with prescription drugs known as anticholinergics, but the side effects such as dry mouth, drowsiness, and constipation caused by the drugs may be as undesirable as the sweating. Unfortunately, however, anticholinergic drugs rarely reduce sweating to any real extent.
