From a historical perspective, there have been philosophical differences in the manner in which people from generations apart dealt with issues important to each of them.  The issues have been basically the same: stress from day to day living, mental health issues, and how to improve one's physical well-being and overall quality of life.

Fifty years ago in America, the people were in a celebratory mood as World War II had ended.  It was a time of bountiful goodness, and money was plentiful.  People were generally upbeat, so, peoples' issues were minimized.

There was a song from that era, and it was recorded on a 45 RPM on the RCA label by an artist by the name of Eddie Fisher.  The name of the song was, "Count Your Blessings" and it went something like this:

"When you're worried and you can't sleep,
Just count your blessings instead of sheep,
And you'll fall asleep counting your blessings."

People from that generation looked the other way in order to avoid dealing with unpleasant issues of the day.  Those with serious mental problems were banished to psychiatric wards, and women with out-of-wedlock babies were shunned.

In the late seventies, the fields of psychiatry, psychology and social work began to emerge as the popular way in which the people from that generation dealt with the issues of concern that were important to them.  The professionals got rich, but too often the clients who went to them for help rarely got what they needed, and what they did get was a large bill for services rendered.

The 21st Century is fast becoming the "Age of Self Help for the Individual."   People around the world are utilizing the self help book to improve their human condition.  The self help book has become the popular way for people to deal with critical issues.

There are self help books for any topic of concern, and an individual can peruse a neighborhood book store or visit an online self help book site on the Internet.  A person could find at his disposal: a spiritual self help book; an inspirational self help book; a self help book for women, or a best selling self help book about gay and lesbian issues.

The top self help books deal with issues regarding a person's individual growth.  A self help book for men might deal with career growth and stress management as it applies to the workplace, or it could be a self help book for finding the hobby that suits the reader best.

In the self improvement self help book the author attempts to draw on first hand experience to engage the reader in a personal way.  Whether you choose to read self help books or listen to the self help book cd, you are bound to derive a benefit from a good self help book or cd.

The classic self help book continues to focus on mental health concerns as it did some fifty years ago.  However, the best self help books of this nature emphasize a completely different treatment regimen than existed fifty years ago. A self help book may deal with anger issues and control, eating disorders, or the disorder of the 21st Century, panic disorder.

The best self help book today is a self help book that readers can identify with and come to the realization that, by reading self help books, they can effect a positive change in themselves that will enhance their lives.

It should be noted that even the bestselling self help book is ineffectual unless the reader can make a personal commitment to follow the advice in the self help books and cd's.  The self help books and cd's that concern day-to-day living are most popular among Generation X.  The thirty-somethings of today have one main purpose for reading self help books, relationships.

The self help book about relationships can deal with issues of husband and wife or parents and their children.  The self help book by a contemporary author may also be concerned with alternative life style issues.

In summation, the self help book you purchase won't be effective if you don't practice what is preached therein, and the self help book and cd won't have any benefits whatsoever if it remains on the shelf collecting dust.  The recommendations of the cd's and self help books must be put into practical use in order for the individual to reap the intended benefits.

The best
self help literature are those whose key passages become ways of living for the reader.  Perhaps today, Eddie Fisher's hit would go like this:

"If you're worried and you can't sleep,
Then go to the bookstore and begin to reap
The benefits from buying a self help book."
