The people of the decade of the 50's believed everything was good. You could drink and smoke yourself into oblivion, and any social malfeasance was shoved under a rug. The adage of the times was "Out of sight, out of mind." By the time the decade of the 70's rolled around, treatment for people's concerns was handled behaviorally by mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and social workers.

People with issues flocked to their offices, paid exorbitant fees and generally got decent treatment in most cases, except these professionals could not answer the question as to how to keep the condition from recurring. Also, they were only available personally during the times their sessions were conducted, which did nothing for the patient in crisis at 2 AM.

Finally, self help philosophers and authors such as Dr. Wayne Dyer and Anthony Robbins got their messages across to the public that the power to change their behavior lies directly within themselves. The self help movement began in the 80's, picked up steam in the 90's and has rocketed into the 21st Century.

The self help books are scorching the best seller lists, and the self help programs are jumping off shelves and being downloaded from computers from self help websites in record numbers. So, since we are now aware that the power to change oneself is within our own abilities, the question is how we obtain that push to effect the needed change.
